Flowering Pear Tree, ‘Cleveland Select’

Grow Your Own Flowering Trees!
This lovely uniform tree naturally grows in a tight, symmetrical shape. ‘Cleveland Select’ has an attractive, narrow, pyramidal shape, making it a better fit for narrower spaces than the wider ‘Bradford’ pear. Features a continuous show of spectacular color all year. Masses of snowy white blooms open in spring. Glossy green foliage turns a striking red-orange color in fall. It also attracts birds!

It is an upright-branched ornamental tree. It grows pyramidal to columnar in youth but tends to become oval to spreading with age. It is noted for its early profuse spring bloom, quality glossy green foliage and often excellent fall color. It produces small, inedible, greenish-yellow fruits (to 1/2″ diameter) which are of little practical value or ornamental interest. ‘Cleveland Select’ is considered to be one of the best of the cultivars currently available in commerce. It is a tight, narrow, pyramidal, thornless ornamental pear tree that typically grows 25-35′ tall and 15′ wide. Some specimens appear almost columnar in habit. Oval, glossy dark green leaves (to 3″ long) have slightly toothed margins. Leaves dance in the breeze due to long stalks. Leaves turn attractive reddish-purple in fall. Five-petaled, creamy white flowers (each to 3/4″ wide) in dense clusters appear in profusion in early spring. Plant in a sunny location for maximum blooms in spring.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. 1. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. 2. Set top of root ball 2” above ground level. Mix ½ garden soil and ½ planting mix. 3. Mound soil to form water basin and water thoroughly. Needs regular watering at first; established trees are fairly drought tolerant. Once established after the first growing season, it tolerates drought and needs little attention. Pruning: Some pruning may become necessary in late winter or early spring if the tree sustains damage from winter storms. Fertilization: In spring before new growth emerges. Use a balanced fertilizer annually to maintain a healthy tree.
