'Golden Delicious' apple is one of the most widely planted varieties in the world, which speaks for its high quality. It is a large all purpose apple that has beautiful golden skin with crisp, delicious flesh. When allowed to ripen to a golden-green color on the tree the true flavor is revealed - exceptionally sweet and rich, almost like eating raw sugar cane. 'Golden Delicious' is also a versatile apple, and can be used both for dessert and cooking purposes, and it has an attractive appearance - which can indeed be golden if left to mature on the tree. 'Golden Delicious' is one of the best pollinators for most other apple varieties and it ripens from September to October. The 'Golden Delicious' needs 600 to 700 chill hours. This is a self-fruitful tree however the best fruit is produced with a pollinator. The best choices: a Crabapple or a Red Delicious.

'Golden Delicious' is now planted in all the major warm apple growing areas of the world. From a grower's perspective 'Golden Delicious' is an attractive proposition - very easy to grow, heavy crops, and fruit that keeps in storage for a long time after harvest. This variety was discovered by a West Virginia farmer at the end of the 19th century. It is generally considered to be a seedling of 'Grimes Golden', to which it bears a strong resemblance. It is also a very popular as a supermarket apple variety.

Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. 1. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. 2. Set the tree in place so the crown (part of the tree where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. 3. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.
