Onion, Red
Red onions are easy to grow, making them excellent for beginner gardeners! Their beautiful red hue and mild to sweet flavor make them perfect for pickling, salads, or tossing on your burgers.
These onions perform best in well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil in full sun. For green table onions, plant the sets so they are nearly touching, and then harvest every other one when the tops reach 6” tall. Dry bulbs will be ready for harvest in August or September.

Fall Planting: Planting onions in the fall helps establish strong roots before winter dormancy. Plant in the fall, 4 to 6 weeks before the ground freezes. Onions perform best in well-drained, fertile soil. 1. Push the sets 1-2” into the soil at 3-6” intervals. 2.Cover with 1-2” of soil. 3. Water regularly during the growing season. After planting, apply mulch after soil has cooled (not immediately after planting) to prevent frost heaves, retain moisture, and moderate soil temperature. In Zones 5-6, apply 4-6” of mulch (straw or shredded leaves). In Zones 7-9, apply 1-2” of mulch (less mulch in warmer areas). In spring, pull back mulch slightly. Dry bulbs will be ready for harvest in spring thru summer when tops have dried and fallen over naturally. Lift onions gently and store in cool, dry conditions.
