Set the bulb firmly in place.3. Cover the bulb with soil and water thoroughly. Do not allow soil to dry out. Fertilize once a month during the growing season with compost, manure, or a 20-20-20 fertilizer mix. Be sure to water when applying fertilizer to prevent fertilizer burn. Bulbs should be dug up in fall after first frost and then overwintered in a cool dry place (set in dry peat or wood shavings) where temperatures do not dip below 45°F.
