Bold beautiful blooms in the middle of winter are one of the simplest joys of the season—and with amaryllis and paperwhites, it couldn’t be easier to enjoy them in your home. Both of these bulbs are designed to thrive indoors with just a little care, rewarding you with weeks of show-stopping flowers.
Amaryllis Care Tips
- For best results, plant soon after purchase.
- If potting your amaryllis, plant the bulb with the top third of the bulb above the soil line—it’s normal for the “shoulders” to show.
- For potted amaryllis, water lightly until growth begins. Once leaves and stems appear, keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.
- Place your amaryllis in a warm, sunny location. Amaryllis’ loves bright light and will grow toward it, so rotate your pot or waxed bulb every few days for straight, tall stems.
- Amaryllis typically bloom in about 6-8 weeks. For longer-lasting flowers, move the pot out of direct sun once the blossoms open.
Paperwhite Care Tips
- Keep them in a cool, bright spot. Too much heat can make them grow tall and floppy.
- Paperwhites typically bloom within 3–4 weeks after planting
Did you know Paperwhites don’t have to be planted in soil? If you don’t want to plant them in a pot, you can just place them in a shallow dish filled with decorative stones or pebbles, if you choose. Nestle the bulbs in so the tops remain above the surface, and add water just until it reaches the base of the bulbs.
If you’re not ready to plant right away…
No rush—your amaryllis bulb can wait for you! If you don’t want to plant it immediately, simply store the bulb in a cool, dry place (around 50–60°F) away from direct sunlight. A paper bag or box in a pantry, basement, or closet works well. Avoid storing in plastic, as it can trap moisture and cause the bulb to rot. When you’re ready to enjoy blooms, pot it up and start watering—the bulb will wake up and begin growing.
