Onion, White
White onions are excellent for cooking! They are easy to grow and one of the most popular vegetables in the home garden! They perform best in well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil in full
sun. For spring planting, plant in early spring in well-drained, well-cultivated soil. They may be planted so the sets are nearly touching, then harvesting every other one for green table onions when tops reach 6” tall. Dry bulbs will be ready for harvest in August or September.

Fall Planting: Planting onions in the fall helps establish strong roots before winter dormancy. Plant in the fall, 4 to 6 weeks before the ground freezes. Onions perform best in well-drained, fertile soil. 1. Push the sets 1-2” into the soil at 3-6” intervals. 2.Cover with 1-2” of soil. 3. Water regularly during the growing season. After planting, apply mulch after soil has cooled (not immediately after planting) to prevent frost heaves, retain moisture, and moderate soil temperature. In Zones 5-6, apply 4-6” of mulch (straw or shredded leaves). In Zones 7-9, apply 1-2” of mulch (less mulch in warmer areas). In spring, pull back mulch slightly. Dry bulbs will be ready for harvest in spring thru summer when tops have dried and fallen over naturally. Lift onions gently and store in cool, dry conditions.
